Man sentenced as part of Operation Sanctuary

Gurhan Sayan, 44, of Plunkett Terrace, Chester-le-Street, has been sentenced to 45-months in prison at Newcastle Crown Court.

The sentencing, on July 25, forms part of Northumbria Police's Operation Sanctuary - an investigation launched into sexual offences committed against women and young girls.

Northumbria Police Assistant Chief Constable Winton Keenen said: "We welcome today’s sentence following the conviction of Gurhan Sayan for a serious sexual assault on a 28-year-old woman.

"Sayan saw this woman in a clearly vulnerable state following a night out as she walked home.

"He deliberately targeted her, luring her into his car where he then drove to a remote area in Elswick and sexually assaulted her before leaving her by the roadside to raise the alarm.

"Sayan’s abhorrent actions saw him preying on the woman’s obvious vulnerability and the fact that she was in no fit state to stop him – this was an appalling crime.
